What makes the perfect winter shirt

A smart-casual style to elegantly defy the cold of the end of the year

Winter is coming ... The cold season is just around the corner and with it, the desire to stay under the warm blanket in the morning is greater than at any other moment of the year. But coming to work wrapped up in the sofa blanket like a puff-pastry sausage roll is no more an option than the thick sweater grandma knitted last Christmas.

So how do you dress for work or party in the winter? Well, simple as the rest of the year - in a shirt, of course! Because you can wear a shirt all year round if you choose it right. See where this is going? Bingo, it all comes down to the materials and fabrics and their weight.

Natural materials and thicker fabrics to provide maximum warmth

From the material side, you could say that what linen is to summer, wool is to winter. But a shirt made of 100% wool is quite thick, can be scratchy because of the wool grease, and the Canadian lumberjack look is not far away either.

So we prefer 100% cotton and an increased fabric weight of 130 to 160 g/m². This equates to a fabric density that will keep you warm. Now that that's settled, the fabric choice for the ideal winter shirt remains wide: flannel, combed cotton, corduroy, chambray, denim...

Soft fabrics in harmony with the season
and the environment

A felted fabric put to the test

Flannel is a fabric with many facets: it can look grungy and casual in an oversize checked shirt or elegant and retro in a three-piece suit. And to get the typical and popular felt-like feel, the cotton has to withstand a lot: first the fabric is milled, i.e. pounded with hammers under running water, and then brushed on one or both sides.

And so as not to be just as hard on the environment, two shirts in this collection were made from recycled cotton from Albiate 1830, a famous Italian weaver, specialized in casual materials. Cotton flannel, by the way, is lighter and thinner than wool flannel and falls naturally, e.g. for a smart office look.

A fluffy fine rib fabric with a retro vibe

Corduroy is a fabric used exclusively in the fall and winter seasons, when the need for comfort is at its highest. Its velvety appearance is due to its complex weave. You recall, the weave corresponds to the way threads are woven together to form a fabric. The basic weave of corduroy is plain weave, to which is added a second weft thread, the "pile thread," whose loops are cut open and brushed up. Thus, the back of a corduroy fabric is smooth and matte, while the front is fluffy and slightly shiny. The steel blue corduroy shirt from this collection can be worn solo, which is more elegant, or as an overshirt, which is more casual.

A fabric with character, robust yet flowing

Chambray, unlike the similar-looking denim, is a relatively flowing fabric with a beautiful, slightly mottled texture due to its two-color plain weave with a white and a blue yarn. The chambray shirt, which has its origins in American workwear, can actually be worn all year round. To adapt it to the winter season, you should go for a thicker fabric weight of about 150 g/m².

That's exactly what we did with our chambray shirt from this collection. In respect to its American roots, we designed it with a button-down collar and in respect to the environment, we chose a recycled cotton chambray from Albiate 1830. Whether worn under a suit, alone with chinos or as an overshirt, the chambray shirt can do it all.

The elegance remains even in winter!
