The chinos

The perfect balance of casual and smart

Chinos are rather light and soft trousers that are more comfortable than suit pants and dressier than jeans, yet just as durable. That's because chinos, like jeans, are designed to endure a lot all while remaining comfortable to wear. And even during those hot summer months, because they were originally part of the uniform of English soldiers, during the colonization of India in 1846. By the way, due to the beige color, at that time the pants were called "khaki" (Hindu for dust), before being imported by American soldiers and renamed "chinos". From this point on, the paths of chinos and jeans, which until then experienced a similar career, parted. Because in the 1950s, these two trousers were spoken for by two opposing groups: jeans were chosen by cool guys to match their rocker style, while the chino became the epitome of the Ivy League students' preppy style.

Today, chinos come in many different variations. From classic cuts to intriguing details and a wide range of colors. Because chinos are the only trousers you can wear with anything and all year round, depending on how thick the fabric is. For us, it is the perfect balance between casual and smart and therefore a garment that you should definitely have in your closet, because it allows for absolute stylistic freedom. In other words, more looks with less. And this is an aspect fully in line with our ambitions and today's ecologically responsible challenges.

Sartorial details tip the scales from casual to smart

If we had to make a top 10 list of clothing items to have in your closet, chinos would be at the top. They are an essential of a man's wardrobe and that's why chinos are a dime a dozen. So, if you are looking for the perfect chino, you will be faced with a huge range. The color is probably the first criterion that guides your search, or it is the thickness of the fabric and therefore the possible seasonality that influences your purchase decision. However, for a pair of trousers that represents a perfect balance between casual and dressy, it is the details that really make the difference between one chino and another.

pleated chinos

For more elegance

A refined waistband and clean seams

When wearing a mismatched ensemble, the waistband interrupts the verticality of the silhouette and draws the eye. And that's why we took extra care with it! For even more elegance, we designed our chinos with a pleat. The pleats also increase comfort, as they offer more freedom of movement. Two corozo buttons and a zipper ensure a perfect fit on the hips. If you prefer a more casual look, you can also turn up the hem. Thanks to the neat inner seams, this also looks very aesthetically pleasing.

For more security

A hidden zipped pocket

The chino gives you absolute style freedom: you can wear it with a nice shirt to work, with a thick sweater in the fall and a simple t-shirt in the summer. As a result, you often don't know what to do with your personal belongings like your cell phone or keys. So you don't lose everything when you're cycling around town, we've included a hidden zipped pocket in the front right pocket.

The after-dinner-split

With their cotton twill and 2% elastane, these chinos are already very comfortable. The front pleats also contribute to this. However, there is another trick in trouser tailoring that significantly increases comfort: the so-called "after-dinner split". This small V-shaped slit is located on the back of the waistband and gives 1-2 cm more waist width, which is very pleasant if you spend a large part of the day sitting at work, for example.

How to wear chinos?

As mentioned earlier, chinos are the perfect balance between casual and dressy. Our pants, with their sartorial finish, lean a little more towards chic, but it's the other parts of your outfit that will define your look.

Responsible and comfortable

Since we designed our first shirt in 2011, you've asked us time and time again about matching trousers for a complete outfit. Since then, we've created suits and pleated trousers, but it was the chinos you kept asking us for. So three years ago, we decided to take on the project labeled "chinos" and drew our first design. The search for the perfect fabric, brought us to Spain, because the Spanish weaving mill, founded in 1923, has made responsible textile solutions its mission - a conviction we share.

The twill of our first chinos is 98% responsible cotton, 75% of which is organic OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 cotton and 23% recycled cotton. Choosing recycled cotton means choosing a sustainable circular economy. And when it comes to the environmental bill, the recycling process uses less water and energy than growing new cotton plants. 2% elastane has been added to the cotton to increase the comfort of a stretchy fabric. With a weight of 270 g/m², our chino thus belongs to the category of environmentally friendly all-season chinos.

What is piece dyeing?

When a material is spun, be it cotton, linen or wool, the yarn is natural or white. To give garments a different color, manufacturers have several options: yarn dyeing, roller dyeing or garment dyeing. In garment dyeing, the final product is completely immersed in the desired dye. Unlike dyeing yarn or rolls of fabric, the color cannot be 100% controlled in this way and therefore imprints differently on seams, pocket edges or belt loops. The result is a beautiful, slightly vintage patina that will only get more beautiful with time.

Chinos are trousers that are meant to live, accompanying you day and night: from business meetings to after-work parties and from family dinners to evenings out with friends. With garment dyeing, it's a life you can see. Just like your favorite pair of jeans or your leather jacket.

sartorial tailored chinos

A solid confection in Tunisia

A dedicated atelier

So we had found the right fabric: hard-wearing, soft, comfortable and responsible. Now we just had to find the atelier that could produce what we had designed on paper: smart casual chinos with a sartorial finish at a reasonable price. We found this atelier on the other side of the Mediterranean, on the other side of our weaver, in northern Tunisia. Founded in 2004, the atelier is a member of the Fair Wear Foundation and is committed to sustainable development. It was recently audited by WeDressFair, an online store and medium for ethical and environmentally responsible fashion brands.
