"Ancient madder" silk is a fabric dyed with madder, an expensive plant that was chemically synthesized in 1869 to produce the first artificially reproduced natural pigment. This silk is characterized by its matte texture and vibrant autumn colors. While the term "ancient" remains mysterious, the word "madder" recalls madeirization, an alteration in wine's color and taste.

Having become popular in the 1930s, "ancient madder" silk ties are now manufactured by a very limited number of artisans. Our "ancient madder" silk ties are woven by one of Italy's most renowned manufacturers and showcase unique geometric patterns with a distinct retro-chic style.
