Overtop or underneath
Overshirts are not only super comfortable, but they're also seasonally and stylistically super practical. The key word is the same in both cases: layering!
In this area, the overshirt unfolds its full potential: whether buttoned or zipped, a shacket still lets the other items of clothing, such as a shirt or a light sweater show. Depending on the material and thickness, it can replace a jacket in the transitional season or be worn under a thick coat in winter. Overshirts are comfortably casual for weekends with friends and family yet smart enough for the office.
In short, the shacket is the piece of clothing you can simply throw on no matter the weather! And ours, with its weight of 307 g per m², will accompany you all winter long.
Boiled wool: a fabric perfectly suited to its season
The basis: 100% virgin wool
In order to design an overshirt for winter that would protect against the uncomfortable side of the season, there is not much questioning around the material. Winter calls for wool because of its temperature regulating properties. Meaning it keeps warm when it's cold and wicks away moisture when running hot.
But we didn't stop just there! The fabric we chose is boiled wool, knitted and processed by MTT, Manifattura Tessile Toscana, in Italy. The fabric manufacturer has specialized in tightly woven fulling fabrics since the 1960s and has made boiled wool its main business for over 30 years.
The making of fulling fabrics
What exactly is boiled wool? No sheep or ball of wool was put into a boiling pot for this purpose, because it is only after knitting that the wool cloths are put into the fulling machine. Agitated in warm, slightly alkaline or acidic baths until the wool fibers open up and stick together creates a felt like appearance. On top of that, during this process, the wool retains air bubbles, making it even better at keeping warm.
To be called "boiled wool", the wool must then be dyed and pressed or decatized.
The result is ideal for winter outdoors
Boiled wool is water-repellent, durable, warm and wrinkle-resistant. Already in the past, these fabrics were used for clothing scandinavian people, traditional costumes of the Alpine countries and, for example, hunters. In other words, people who brave snow, wind and rain yet still need a great freedom of movement. Boiled wool is visually rustic and fits perfectly with the urban outdoor explorer style.
The original style of the overshirt
A classic collar
The name says it all: a shacket is like a shirt, only thicker and mainly worn as a midlayer or a jacket. That's why it needs a classic shirt collar that suits everyone and goes well with other types of shirt collars, turtlenecks, crewnecks etc.
A normal button placket
The same goes for the closure: there are overshirts with zippers, but we opted for the original style of shacket, with corozo buttons. They are sturdy, pretty and ecofriendly.
Two chest pockets
At the risk of repeating ourselves: The original overshirt, as inspired by military jackets, needs chest pockets. It's stylish and it's practical. Especially when they can be closed with a buttoned lapel.
A casual cut
The most important thing about a layering piece is just that: that it can be worn in layers according to the onion principle. The fit of our wool overshirt is therefore relaxed enough to wear a sweater underneath while still keeping enough freedom of movement.
