Boiled wool: a fabric perfectly suited to its season
The foundation: 100% virgin wool
To create a winter overshirt that can withstand the season's inclement weather, the choice of material immediately seemed obvious to us: a fabric made of 100% thermoregulating wool, which keeps you warm when it's cold and breathes by wicking away moisture when it's hot. Quite practical for preventing bad odors.
Wool, indeed, but not just any wool! We've chosen to partner with MTT, the Italian textile manufacturer (Manifattura Tessile Toscana). Specializing in dense wool fabrics since the 1960s, boiled wool has been at the core of their expertise for over 30 years.
The felting process
So, what exactly is boiled wool? No sheep or skein of wool has been cooked in a pot of boiling water. It's only after being knitted that wool fabrics go through the felting or fulling process. In a felting machine, they are immersed in a bath of hot water and subjected to vigorous beating to open and then tighten the wool fibers. It's this process that creates air bubbles in the wool and gives it that felted appearance. In terms of finishing and to be called "boiled wool," the wool that comes out of the felting machine is dyed and then either pressed or decatted. And there you have it: you get warm, comfortable wool that can be tailored to your needs.
