How to properly wear suspenders?

2 May 2025

Long-forgotten accessories, suspenders are making a remarkable comeback in men's wardrobes. Practical, elegant and original, they add a touch of character to an outfit, provided they are worn correctly. There are two main types of suspenders: clip-on suspenders and button-on suspenders.

Each has its own characteristics, advantages and uses: here is a guide to help you adopt them without making mistakes.

Clip-on suspenders: easy, modern, versatile

For whom?

Clip-on suspenders are ideal for beginners or those who want to try this style without making modifications to their trousers. They also suit those who frequently alternate between several pairs of trousers.

How do they work?

As their name suggests, these suspenders attach to the trouser waistband using metal clips. Simply clip the two clips at the front, on either side of the fly, and the one at the back in the center of the back. This forms a Y-shaped structure, the most common configuration.

What to wear them with?

Clip-on suspenders pair well with:

  • Suit trousers without belt loops (rare, but possible);
  • Chino trousers or dress trousers with belt loops, provided you don't wear a belt at the same time;
  • A formal or casual shirt, tucked into the trousers;
  • A wedding outfit or event with a retro spirit.

Avoid:

  • The belt: belt and suspenders should never be worn together. They serve the same function;
  • Trousers that are too heavy or rigid: the clips may slip or come off;
  • Thin or delicate shirts: the friction from the clips can damage the fabric.

Advantages:

  • No modification required on trousers;
  • Easy to put on and remove;
  • Good choice for occasional use.

Disadvantages:

  • Less elegant for very formal attire;
  • Risk of damaging fabrics with repeated use;
  • Less stable: the clips can come undone during the day.

Button-on suspenders: classic, elegant, timeless

For whom?

Button-on suspenders are for those who want a more dressed-up, structured and traditional look. They are the preferred choice for lovers of sartorial style or ceremonial attire. They require adapted trousers, with buttons sewn inside or outside the waistband.

How do they work?

They attach using two pairs of tabs (in leather or reinforced fabric) that fasten to six buttons: three at the front, three at the back. They generally form a Y or an X on the back, depending on the model.

If your trousers don't have buttons, you can:

  • Have them sewn on by a tailor or do it yourself;
  • Buy a clip-on button system, without sewing;
  • Choosing hybrid models combining buttons and clips.

What to wear them with?

Button-on suspenders are perfect for:

  • Suit trousers without belt loops;
  • Trousers in wool, flannel or thick material;
  • A tucked-in, well-fitted shirt;
  • A vest or jacket, to hide the attachments and structure the silhouette.

They are often seen in outfits inspired by the 1930s to 1950s, or in a three-piece suit.

Advantages:

  • Very elegant, perfect for a refined style;
  • Good stability: they stay in place better;
  • More comfortable in the long term, as they put less strain on the trouser waistband.

Disadvantages:

  • Require adapted or modified trousers;
  • Less practical to interchange from one pair of trousers to another;
  • Slightly harder to find in ready-to-wear.

Some tips for wearing suspenders properly

The style

Choose solid, subdued colors for formal attire: navy, burgundy, gray or black. For a more casual or original style, opt for discreet patterns (stripes, dots) or textured materials (wool, linen).

Harmonize leather or metal details with your shoes, watch or buttons.

The fit

Suspenders should be adjusted but not stretched to the maximum. Too short, they pull on the shoulders and, too long, they don't support the trousers effectively. Prefer adjustable models with sturdy metal sliders.

Absolutely avoid

  • Wearing suspenders and a belt at the same time;
  • Wearing them over a t-shirt or without a shirt, unless deliberately aiming for a highly stylized effect;
  • Choosing poor quality novelty suspenders for a formal outfit.

Suspenders are not just practical: they allow you to assert a personal style, provided you respect certain codes. For a simple and versatile first approach, clip-on suspenders are ideal. For a more elegant and traditional look, button-on suspenders make all the difference.

Whatever option you choose, worn correctly, suspenders can transform a basic look into a striking outfit. Focus on sobriety, quality, and above all: never wear belt and suspenders together!
