WHAT IS THE SPEZZATO?

Meaning literally "broken", the spezzato is the art of tuning a jacket and pants or jeans by mismatching colors in order to bring contrast. What the devotees of monochrome looks would interpret as badly studied mixes, proves to be extremely chic: the spezzato is a contemporary Italian style, and, if mastered, brings a creative personal touch of absolute elegance.

SOME GOLDEN RULES TO GET THE SPEZZATO

1. Contrasts make the difference

Your jacket and pants must be of different color, with a clever balance.

A navy blue jacket with black pants will be interpreted as a bad awakening and a bad hanger pick in your dressing room. Conversely, apple green pants with a red jacket will be too eccentric as well. Between these two extremes, the combinations are multiple: burgundy jacket and blue trousers, navy blue jacket and grey pants are two examples among so many possibilities.

2. Move out of the routine

Dare colors and mix the patterns. Put aside your shirts and plain ties. Do not be afraid to combine patterned ties with patterned shirts.

Let us take here the striped shirt, a must-have in the wardrobe of the Italian man, which will soon become your indispensable garment. You can match it with a striped tie, on one condition, that these two similar patterns are not having the same size. You can also wear a striped shirt with a cashmere or flower pattern tie for example. In this case, make sure that these two patterns are the same size.

3. The accessory as an ally

Who said accessory, said pocket square. There are many ways to wear a pocket square. The Italian preaches the pocket square. Don't be afraid!

- Choose appropriate opportunities: not all audiences will necessarily be receptive to your chromatic audacities; you can test with subtle variations beforehand.
