How to properly care for shirts?

Washing

You can save the cost and time of professional shirt cleaning, because shirts can be easily washed in your own washing machine. However, you should remove the collar stays before washing.

White shirts should be washed exclusively with white, so they keep their crispy bright colour. Light blue, pink or dark shirts should be washed with other similar colors.

Shirts made of cotton should be washed at a maximum of 30 °C to prevent the natural fibers from retracting.

Pro tip: linen shirts tend to wrinkle more easily. Set a low spin setting, so the shirt is easier to iron later.

Drying

Shirts are best left to air dry on a hanger. This saves energy costs, is more environmentally friendly and makes subsequent ironing easier. Hang your damp shirt on a plastic hanger and smooth it out as much as possible to prevent drying wrinkles.

The art of ironing

General rules

Rule #1: Always make sure your iron is clean and free of limescale, dust and other particles before you start ironing.

Rule #2: Always clean your iron when it is cold. Clear vinegar is often recommended for cleaning and descaling the iron.

Rule #3: Iron your shirt inside out to avoid stains.

Rule #4: Do not hang freshly ironed shirts directly back into the closet. Let them air dry and cool for a few minutes, otherwise they can bring humidity into your closets and increase the likelihood of creating new wrinkles.

Rule #5: We recommend ironing in this particular order : first the collar, sleeves and cuffs, then the back and finally the front of the shirt. Make sure to go around the buttons with the iron.

Pro tip: To make ironing your shirts easier, we recommend ironing them when they are still slightly damp, or dampening them a bit with a spray bottle. For stubborn wrinkles, you can also place a clean, damp cloth on your shirt.

Collars

Always start by ironing the stiffest part of your shirt: the collar. Fold up the collar, remove the collar stays and place it face down on your ironing board. Run the iron lengthwise from the tip to the center of the collar. Mark the collar fold by now folding the collar back down and running the iron over the inside of the collar, paying special attention to the points so they don't stand back up.

Sleeves

As with the collar, you should iron the inside of the cuffs first, then the outside. Avoid going over the buttons.

Then move on to the sleeve.

Spread the shirt sleeve out on the ironing board as smoothly as possible, with the cuff open towards the top.

Run the iron lengthwise from the collar to the cuff, paying special attention to the edges. Proceed in the same way for the second sleeve.

Shoulders

Place one of the shoulders over the narrow end of the ironing board.

Run the iron flat over the shoulder. The shoulder seam should be parallel to the edges of your ironing board.

Repeat the step for the other side.

Step 5: Fold the bottom of the shirt up, halfway between the collar and the bottom.

Step 1: Button all the buttons on your shirt. Don't forget the one on your collar if there are any. Lay your shirt on its front on a flat surface.

Step 2: Place an A4 sheet of paper (be careful not to fold it all the way through the steps) and fold a third of the shirt inwards onto the sheet.

Step 3: Fold the sleeve horizontally, without putting too much pressure on it.

Step 4: Fold the other side of the shirt towards the centre and repeat the steps for the second sleeve.

Step 5: Fold about 15 to 20cm from the bottom of the shirt upwards.

Step 6: Now you just have to put your shirt in your suitcase! You can select ties or other accessories to wear with it.

Be careful: don't overload your suitcase to avoid your shirts getting squeezed and wrinkled.

The hanger

Don't forget to button the collar button and the one just below it to keep the rounded shape of your shirt collar.
