How to properly care for leather belts?
Leather belts are practical, elegant and literally tie the outfit together as an accessory. Belts thus play a supporting role and go through a lot in everyday life: they are constantly opened and closed, rub against table edges and get sometimes blazing sun, sometimes a good rain shower. However, the care is usually neglected. Although leather care of belts is at least as important as that of leather shoes. And it starts with the right storage!
Storage:
- In a drawer: rolled up from tip to buckle, belts can be stored in a drawer without any problems. It's best to place each belt in a divided compartment. This prevents belts from rubbing against each other and scratching buckles or leather. If you don't have such drawer compartments, you can also store your leather belts in small cloth bags. Often times brands sell their belts in such bags.
- In a wardrobe: use hangers or belt hooks and hang your belts by the buckle. This saves space and prevents creases in the leather.
Belt care by leather type
Leather is a living material that becomes more beautiful over time. However, to get there, it must be cared for, nourished and protected. Choose a polish that matches the color and type of leather. Before applying the polish, wipe the leather with a clean, slightly damp cloth to remove any impurities. Then apply the polish with another clean, lint-free cloth. Then make your leather belt shine by polishing it with a dry cloth.
Suede is sensitive to moisture. The first thing you should do with a new suede belt is to protect it. There are numerous waterproofing sprays for this purpose, choose one that is suitable for suede and repeat the treatment about every three months. For daily care, a suede brush is essential: brush gently to remove dirt and straighten the fine fibers of the leather. And if you have a small stain, clear household vinegar can help.
