How to choose your bowtie for a wedding?
DONNING A BOWTIE: BASIC RULES
Here you'll find all the guidelines you need if you're not sure how to choose a bowtie for your wedding. Take note of these tips! Many grooms take into account the colour or overall theme of the wedding when choosing their bowtie. This is a given, since it truly is the perfect accessory for creating discreet similarity between bride and groom: the bowtie can perfectly match the bouquet, for example.
First of all, you should think about the ceremony's dominant colour(s). You can choose the same colour as your suit - and why not opt for tone on tone if the major shades are pastels?
Worn with a tuxedo, elegant, solid-coloured bowties are reserved for official ceremonies, such as a ball or charity dinner. Nevertheless, it is quite possible for you to go with a solid-coloured bowtie, depending on the style of your wedding.
The overall atmosphere of the ceremony is equally important and should influence your choice: the same bowtie shouldn't be worn for a traditional wedding as for a chic, white, country, colourful, exotic wedding...
TAKING THEME AND SUIT INTO CONSIDERATION
As soon as you've determined the colour of your bowtie, the next step is to choose the pattern. You'll need to consider the wedding theme and go with a corresponding pattern.
At a country wedding, opt for a floral or natural Liberty print. If the theme is more chic, a gold or silver solid-coloured or micro patterned bowtie in a refined textile such as silk is ideal. For more classic weddings, go with a graphic and more modern Japanese patterned bowtie.
Then ensure that the colours and patterns of your bowtie go with the rest of the outfit. For example, don't wear a silk bowtie with velvet trousers or a denim shirt; also, don't wear a confetti-patterned bowtie with a suit. Instead, wear a preferably white, sky blue, pink or Prince of Wales chequered French cuff shirt.
When matching colours, let your personality shine! Using a colour spectrum, go with a combination that's monochrome (similar shades), analogue (adjacent colours) or complementary (opposite colours, to create contrast). You have free reign when it comes to cufflinks - as long as they respect the theme. The most important thing is that you like them!
PAIRING WITH SKIN AND HAIR TONE, NOT TO MENTION THE DETAILS
The colour of your bowtie should also brighten your complexion and hair, not tarnish it. Experiment with different colour shades in front of the mirror by placing them near your face and seeing which one suits you best!
There are, however, a few rules to follow when it comes to your hair colour: avoid dark yellow, orange or light green with blonde hair, no light pink, pastel or dark green with dark brown hair, redheads should avoid pink, pastels and burgundy and we don't recommend gray or yellow for those with brown hair.
In addition, small details can make all the difference during a ceremony: for example, having the colour of the suit reappear on the ribbon of the bridal bouquet or opting for a pocket square similar to the fabric of the wedding dress.
THE ENTOURAGE: RECALLING COLOUR AND PATTERN
Think of the ones around you! You can easily match your bowtie and its colours to your guests' accessories. To avoid this becoming redundant, you just have to be creative and use the same pattern or the same colours on various parts of their accessories.
Accordingly, the variations are endless: your witnesses could have a diamond tip bowtie in the same pattern, your cousins could wear a bowtie with a similar print in the middle and your friends could fold a pocket square with the same colour scheme into their suit jackets.
Feel free to let colours and pattern reappear on the outfits of the guests participating in the organization of the ceremony - even on women's and children's accessories.
Follow these steps in order and you'll discover that matching your bowtie to your outfit, body shape and wedding ceremony is relatively easy!
