Scottish lisle thread is the name for a cotton fibre that has been mercerised. Mercerisation is a chemical process, invented by John Mercer in 1844. The cotton fibers are treated with leach. The resulting socks are less elastic and more shiny than others. Socks made of scottish lisle thread are comfortable and pleasingly airy.
