The centrepiece of the traditional three-piece suit, the men's waistcoat (or vest) has reclaimed its place of distinction in the contemporary wardrobe. Fitted close to the body and sleeveless, it covers the torso from the shoulders down to just above the trouser waistband. It is characterised by a back often made from silk or acetate lining, fitted with an adjustable strap (the martingale) allowing the fit to be tailored to the millimetre.

The waistcoat must meet very strict length requirements:
- The grand three-piece formalism: Wear the waistcoat perfectly matched to the fabric of your suit and trousers. The shirt and belt should never be visible between the bottom of the waistcoat and the top of the trousers.
- Modern mismatched elegance: Pair a wool flannel or brown tweed waistcoat with navy blue suit trousers and a white shirt for a British-inspired style.
- The fastening rule: Like the jacket, always leave the very last bottom button of your waistcoat undone to ensure comfort and ease of movement.
