300g of natural softness

Cashwool® 1978 from Zegna Baruffa

"Made in Italy" is a true reference in fashion indicating artisanal craftsmanship lost elsewhere. And in the field of wool, it's at Zegna Baruffa where it happens. They are the ones who revolutionized the textile sector in the late 70s with Cashwool®, a merino wool as luminous as silk and as soft as cashmere, and the one we use for all our winter sweaters.

Extra-fine merino wool

Merino wool is known for its fineness and it's what gives it its softness and makes it so pleasant to wear next to the skin. With an average diameter of about 19.5 microns, the merino wool fiber is 3 times finer than wool from other sheep breeds. Still having trouble imagining this fineness? For comparison, 70 microns is the average diameter of a human hair.

Certified mulesing-free and OEKO-TEX®

Certified Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) since 2019, Zegna Baruffa uses one of the rare Australian wools guaranteed mulesing-free. This label ensures the welfare of sheep for wool production. In addition to better land management, the partner farmer commits, among other things, not to practice mulesing on their sheep.

crew neck sweater certifications

"You don't know it,
you're already busy judging it!"

To be able to judge a sweater, you still need to know its weight and gauge. Admittedly, knowing these two figures won't have the same effect as putting on the sweater and feeling its soft knit envelop you. But it's a good way, from a distance, to get an idea of its thickness and therefore its seasonality.

The weight

For a sweater, the weight is linked to its density. And ours has a fighting weight of 300g, which officially places it in the lightweight winter sweater category.

Unofficially, a sweater of this weight is ultimately an all-season sweater, depending on the local climate and how you wear it of course: next to the skin, it's ideal for mid-season 10-15°C, over a shirt, it will accompany you all winter. So you won't be trekking in Lapland with your Cashwool sweater, but in mainland areas it will keep you warm enough during the cold season (assuming you add a jacket or coat to go outside).

The gauge

The gauge measures the thickness of a sweater. It corresponds to the number of needles on a knitting machine that fit in the space of one inch (that is, 2.54 cm). The higher the gauge, the finer the sweater. The gauge of our Cashwool sweater is 14, which corresponds to a high fineness.

Traditional manufacturing in Italy

Over half a century of family knitting

It was near Florence in Italy, in the late 60s, that the knitting workshop for our sweaters turned its needles for the first time. Nearly half a century later, this workshop has become a company specializing in knitwear and accessories. Yet, it's still the same family running the knitting machines.

Solid and anti-waste construction

To avoid significant fabric waste and achieve a better cut, all our sweaters are made using the fully-fashioned construction technique. In other words, we shape the sweater entirely through knitting. We explain everything about the different knit construction techniques in our blog article.
