300g of natural softness
The Cashwool® 1978 by Zegna Baruffa
The "Made in Italy" label is a true benchmark in fashion, signifying a level of artisanal craftsmanship lost elsewhere. And in the world of wool, Zegna Baruffa is where it all happens. They are the ones who revolutionized the textile industry in the late 1970s with the Cashwool®, a merino wool as luminous as silk and as soft as cashmere — and the one we use for all our winter sweaters.
An extra-fine merino wool
Merino wool is known for its fineness, and it is this that gives it its softness and makes it so pleasant to wear next to the skin. With an average diameter of around 19.5 microns, the merino wool fiber is 3 times finer than the wool of other sheep breeds. Still struggling to picture this fineness? For comparison, 70 microns is the average diameter of a human hair.

Certified mulesing-free and OEKO-TEX®
Certified Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) since 2019, Zegna Baruffa uses one of the rare Australian wools guaranteed mulesing-free. This label ensures the welfare of sheep in wool production. In addition to better land management, the partner farmer commits, among other things, to not practicing mulesing on their sheep.

"You don't know it,
you're already judging it!"
To judge a sweater, you first need to know its weight and gauge. Of course, knowing these two figures won't have the same effect as slipping on the sweater and feeling its soft knit wrap around you. But it is a good way, from a distance, to get a sense of its thickness and therefore its seasonality.
The weight
For a sweater, weight is linked to its density. And ours comes in at a fighting weight of 300g, which officially places it in the category of lightweight winter sweaters.
Unofficially, a sweater of this weight is ultimately an all-season sweater, depending on the local climate and how you wear it of course: next to the skin, it's ideal for in-between seasons at 10–15°C; over a shirt, it will see you through the whole winter. You won't be trekking in Lapland in your Cashwool sweater, but in the city it will keep you warm enough during the cold season (assuming you add a jacket or coat for going outside).
The gauge
The gauge, for its part, measures the thickness of a sweater. It corresponds to the number of needles on a knitting machine that fit within the space of one inch (i.e., 2.54 cm). The higher the gauge, the finer the sweater. The gauge of our Cashwool sweater is 14, which corresponds to a high level of fineness.

Traditional manufacturing in Italy
More than half a century of family knitting
It was near Florence in Italy, in the late 1960s, that the knitting workshop behind our sweaters first set its needles in motion. Nearly half a century later, this workshop has become a company specializing in knitted clothing and accessories. Yet it is still the same family running the knitting machines.
A solid, waste-free construction
To avoid significant fabric waste and achieve a better cut, all our sweaters are made using the fully-fashioned construction technique. In other words, the sweater is shaped entirely by knitting. We explain everything about the different knit construction techniques in our blog article.
