Tie clips

Tie pins make it possible to wear a tie without necessarily wearing a jacket.Americans believe the pin should be placed low enough to be hidden by the jacket, if one is worn. As for the British, they prefer not to wear tie pins at all! The British are often right when it comes to men’s elegance, but they do not have a monopoly on the matter.

The different types of tie clips

The tie clip can be slid or clipped between the shirt and the tie. The clips we offer at The Nines come in slim or regular size. The added value of a tie clip lies in the fact that it will reflect, just like a cufflink, your sense of style and will enhance the other pieces of your look.

Whether you prefer to slide it or clip it onto your shirt, both types of clips share the same objective: ensuring your tie maintains an impeccable hold at all times.

Color and finish

The first rule regarding the finish of your tie clip is that it should match that of your other accessories, such as your watch, your cufflinks, or your bracelets. For example, a gold tie clip will pair perfectly with gold cufflinks.

Use colors sparingly. Indeed, some bolder colors are more difficult to match than others. In the same way, certain shade combinations clash. On the other hand, other colors such as gold work with many combinations, for example with navy blue or burgundy. Finally, if you opt for a black tie, you will have more matching possibilities.

Position and size

It is important to position the clip correctly so that it holds the tie in place properly. Too high, and you will crush the tie, causing it to tend to spread out. Too low, and the clip will no longer be of any use, as your tie will take on an irregular and altered shape. The place where your clip will be most useful for keeping your ties well positioned is below the third button of your shirt, or even before the fourth button.

The tie must be wider than the clip, as the reverse is not elegant. If you wear a slim tie, pair it with a slim clip. The same applies to a wide tie. The clip generally measures between 2 and 7 cm. We recommend trying different clip sizes on the chosen tie and opting for the one that suits it best!

Matching your outfit

The tie clip works with any type of outfit. You can perfectly wear one alongside a blazer or a cardigan, for example. Just make sure it is visible, or even raised if you are wearing a closed jacket, so as to always enhance the elegance of your ensemble.

Do bear in mind to match the type of tie clip to the tie material: a pinch tie clip should not be used to keep a wool tie in place, for example, as it risks damaging the knit.
