The origins of the American collar
It was John Brooks in the early 1900s who popularised the American collar. This button-down collar has its origins in American polo players. During their polo matches, the collar tips would obstruct their vision as they galloped. To remedy this problem, buttons were added to the collar tips to keep the flaps in place.

The characteristics of the American collar
The button-down collar shirt features a soft collar and contains no collar stays. The gap between the collar points is very small, so if you have an elongated face we advise against the button-down collar, which tends to lengthen faces. The advantage of this shirt is that it can be worn for all occasions, whether for a casual look or a more formal one.
Its stylistic flexibility allows you to wear the American collar shirt for any occasion you choose. Its rather classic collar reflects the elegance of this shirt and is generally sufficient on its own. For a casual chic style, you can absolutely opt for this shirt — you will not put a foot wrong.
Our style tips for the American collar shirt
Both original and timeless, the American collar shirt is one we recommend you have in your wardrobe, gentlemen. Here are a few outfit examples you can put together with the button-down collar shirt:
- To go to work looking elegant, we recommend putting on a white American collar shirt and a grey suit. To add a touch of colour to your outfit, accessorise the whole look with a burgundy tie.
- To join colleagues for after-work drinks, go for a casual yet smart style. Opt for a khaki poplin American collar shirt. Pair it with raw denim jeans and a pair of sneakers for a casual chic style.
- For a Sunday brunch on a terrace, on a sunny but cool November day, we recommend opting for a navy blue flannel American collar shirt — flannel is ideal for mid-season. Put on a pair of beige trousers and some sneakers. You are ready to go for brunch.

A question about our collections?
The button-down collar features small buttons that secure the collar points to the shirt. Created by Brooks Brothers in 1896, it's distinguished by its smart-casual appearance and stability. The collar stays in place thanks to the buttons.
This shirt is versatile: it works well with jeans or a casual suit. Perfect without a tie, it's ideal for business casual settings. Avoid wearing it for very formal occasions.
The collar stays in place and doesn't lift up, maintaining a neat appearance all day. It's a practical choice combining casual elegance with ease of wear. Particularly suitable for modern professional environments.
Wash it like a regular shirt. Pay special attention when ironing the collar corners: iron the points first, then the rest of the collar. Buttons need regular checking for security.
