The linen shirt

The summer star everyone is talking about

The linen shirt is to summer what the flannel shirt is to winter: a must have. So it goes without saying that this staple piece is especially comfortable to wear on hot, sunny days.

At the same time, everyone seems to have a firm opinion on the qualities or disadvantages of the linen shirt. For some, it's "too casual and only suitable for the beach". For others, it's "too see-through" or "too wrinkly".

When the time came to work on our summer shirts for this year, we had very specific ideas! We wanted an elegantly casual linen shirt that could be worn at anytime and in many different ways, from the air-conditioned office to after-works on the sunny rooftop bar and from boho weddings to vacations by the sea. To achieve this, we rely on the same fool-proof requirements of our other shirts, such as the sartorial features for durability and the rather figure-hugging cut, starting from our regular fit for a modern and elegant silhouette. Of course, being a seasonal garment, the shirt must be properly adapted to summer temperatures for optimal comfort. And we found that comfort in the linen and Tencel™ fabric from French weaver Emanuel Lang.

French linen

The come-back of an ancestral know-how

France is the leading producer of flax in the world. However, due to the lack of French spinning mills, almost 80% of the crop is exported to China, which is a total nonsense ecologically and economically speaking. Because even though flax is the most environmentally friendly textile fiber, needing only natural irrigation and absorbing tons of CO2, transporting it across the Asian continent severely damages the environmental value of flax. Not to mention the loss of artisanal know-how and jobs, since France used to have many spinning mills.

This is where the name Emanuel Lang comes in! This shirting weaver, founded in 1856, and three other Alsatian textile companies have joined forces under the name "360 Lin" to work for the relocalization of bast fiber processing. They have already taken the first step by reestablishing France's first linen spinning mill since the 1990s.
And to that we say chapeau!

A linen-Tencel™-mix made in France

The right mix

Linen is a beautiful, eco-friendly material that is very popular in summer. But on its own, it can be a bit rough t the touch with its rather distinct texture. To counteract this slightly more casual character, increase the functionality of the fabric and make it easier to care for, the ideal counterpart had to be found: Lyocell.

The lightness of linen

55% linen, harvested from the Normandy coast, thus makes up the (light) majority of the fabric in our summer shirts. And light is the right word, because linen is particularly light and airy! At the same time, the herbaceous plant is also very robust and has many other qualities: it is hydrophilic, temperature-regulating, hypoallergenic and antibacterial. So linen keeps you cool in the summer without binding unpleasant sweaty odors. Our fabric is Masters of Linen® and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, which guarantees its traceability as well as cultivation without artificial irrigation, GMOs and waste production, and processing without harmful products.

The softness of Lyocell

The remaining 45% is made of Tencel™, the registered name for the synthetic material known as Lyocell or "plant silk". It is obtained from the shredded wood of deciduous trees such as eucalyptus and is therefore a synthetic fiber, but of natural origin. Lyocell is not only very durable, but also absorbs moisture efficiently and dries quickly. So you don't have to worry about sweat marks on hot summer days. And it is this particular blend that gives our linen tencel shirts a softer, flowing and less wrinkled hand.

How to wear a linen shirt

The linen shirt is one of the seasonal essentials of the men's wardrobe. That's why we've kept its timeless character and played with both, collars and colors to create six different shirts that are all easy to wear.

In regards to the collars, we played for both teams: modern with short stand-up collars and classic with shark and button-down collars. In termes of colors, we went for a clean, summer palette with a pop of color: classic optic white, fresh light blue, elegant navy blue and a slightly different green. This summer shirt, with its sartorial features, maintains the perfect balance between casual and smart. It is this stylistic balance that allows you to wear your linen shirt both ways, depending on what other garments and accessories you choose for your outfit.

The quality of traditional, european tailoring

Made with love for a traditional craft

Our summer shirts are made with the utmost care in our shirt atelier near the Moldovan border. Since 2016, we have entrusted the realisation of our designs to this atelier, which is ISO 9001 and OEKO-TEX SteP certified and has passed on its centuries-old expertise for generations.

Sartorial finishes

As with all our other shirts, quality workmanship is paramount, so that you can enjoy your new garment for years to come. This includes:

- Solid French seams with 7 stitches per cm
- Hem gussets reinforcing the side seams
- Eco-friendly mother-of-pearl lookalike buttons made of vegetal resin, cross-stitched
- And a final horizontal buttonhole to avoid unwanted openings

A vintage dye for a piece that lives

What is garment dying?

When a material is spun, be it cotton, linen or wool, the yarn is natural or white. To give garments a different color, manufacturers have several options: yarn dyeing, roller dyeing or garment dyeing. Our linen and tencel shirts are dyed after manufacture in a partner workshop of our master shirtmaker in Romania. In this garment dyeing procedure, the final product is completely immersed in the desired dye. Unlike dyeing yarn or rolls of fabric, the color cannot be 100% controlled in this way and therefore imprints differently on the seams or buttonholes. The result is a beautiful, slightly vintage patina that will only get more beautiful with time.

The linen shirt is your best friend in the summer and accompanies you day and night. From the business meeting, to the boho wedding or to the beach bar - with garment dyeing is a life that you see. Just like your favorite jeans or your leather jacket.
