The complicated history of the wrinkle-resistant shirt
If there is one thing that frustrates the vast majority of men (and women, for that matter) who wear shirts every day, it is the tedious task of ironing, or the weekly dry-cleaning appointment and the unpleasant surprises that can come with it.
Research into and offerings of so-called "wrinkle-resistant" shirts have been multiplying for over 50 years. A wrinkle-resistant shirt promises to eliminate all ironing for its lucky owner, who, all too often, will be disappointed for one reason or another: either the shirt fails to keep its promise and shows creases after washing, or it feels "stiff" or "cardboard-like". Let's be honest right away, a truly beautiful wrinkle-resistant shirt does not exist! Or if it does, it will be made from a stiff material, unpleasant to the touch and based on chemicals that strip the cotton of all its softness.

Made from the finest Egyptian cottons and treated with environmentally friendly products, the Journey range promises a shirt that stays impeccable, even after being worn all day or spending hours in a suitcase during a business trip.
A promise we have been delivering on since 2020 with the launch of our first wrinkle-resistant shirt! They are incredibly comfortable to wear, and after a run through the washing machine followed by drying on a hanger, only a quick pass of the iron was needed for a clean, smooth result.
The foundation: superior quality cotton
Egyptian "extra long staple" (ELS) cotton
We say it often: the key to a quality shirt is its fabric! And the fabrics in the Thomas Mason Journey range are made from the cream of the crop of cotton: Egyptian extra long staple cotton.
Grown exclusively on the fertile lands of the Nile Delta, ELS cotton fibres are among the most precious in the world ! The soil and climate of this region foster the growth of cotton fibres with exceptional characteristics:
- Min. 35 mm average fibre length (ELS)
- 87.3% uniformity index
- 44.6 g/tex fibre strength
- 74.8 rd brightness level
Spun and woven in Italy, the long, fine and uniform fibres of ELS cotton are the source of the robustness, silky hand and luminosity of Thomas Mason fabrics.
The bonus: an innovative and eco-responsible
anti-crease treatment
Historically obtained using an aggressive chemical formula based on formaldehyde, the "non-iron" shirt is often criticised for its stiff feel and lack of comfort. While its practicality is commendable, what man could give up the pleasant softness of a beautiful 100% cotton shirt? Not to mention that chemicals such as formaldehyde can prove harmful to human health.
So how do you enjoy the easy care of a so-called wrinkle-resistant shirt without losing the look and comfort of cotton? By developing a new environmentally friendly process with the best in the field!
The two treatment steps for a naturally wrinkle-resistant shirt:
1. Anti-crease treatment in Belgium
It is in Belgium, at a textile finishing specialist, that the fabrics are immersed in a non-chemical solution at very low temperature, which is completely eliminated during drying.
This first treatment allows the cotton fibres to retract, giving them dynamic properties that prevent creasing and wrinkling. Certified Oeko-Tex, the Belgian company guarantees a process free of toxic substances for people and the environment.
2. Application of a natural resin in Switzerland
After Belgium, it's Switzerland's turn, where a second partner applies a natural resin that preserves the natural beauty of the cotton by keeping the cotton threads tightly packed and parallel to one another.
As for the exact formula behind the process developed by Thomas Mason, you will forgive us, but it is a carefully guarded trade secret.
The finish: European craftsmanship
A century-old specialist workshop
Made in our workshop in Romania, our wrinkle-resistant shirts are crafted with the utmost care by our master shirtmakers. Since 2016, we have entrusted our projects to this workshop with proven expertise, certified ISO 9001 and OEKO-TEX SteP, a know-how passed down from generation to generation for nearly a century.
Mastering the art of sartorial tailoring
As with our other shirts, you will find all the hallmarks of a quality shirt, including:
- the 7-stitch-per-centimetre English seams that provide elegance and durability
- the reinforcement bar tacks at the side seams
- the mother-of-pearl effect buttons in eco-responsible plant-based resin sewn in a cross stitch
- the last horizontal buttonhole that prevents unwanted openings
